Resonance Records is pleased to present to the world this important addition to the Bill Evans legacy, a recording that represents the only surviving studio recording of the Bill Evans Trio in the lineup with drummer Jack DeJohnette along with bassist Eddie Gomez, a lineup of Evans' trio that existed for only six months in 1968.By 1968, Bill Evans already had the delicate, refined, searching approach that was his trademark and established his reputation as an exceptional pianist and star on the piano jazz horizon. No pianist before him possessed such expressive power and such varied moods and emotions as Evans. His sensitivity was perfectly and appropriately complemented by bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Now Evans was in the Black Forest, where Oscar Peterson had been playing regularly since the early 1960s in the living room of producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, a man known for his innovative recording techniques
The recordings on this album are the material of a studio session on June 20, 1968, recorded by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (HGBS) and Joachim-Ernst Brendt in the Black Forest. This is no ordinary recording. This rousing Bill Evans session was recorded five days after a famous performance by Evans, bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette at the 1968 Montreux Jazz Festival.
The Montreux live Verve recording won a Grammy, but this studio session has lain in the vaults ever since.For the first time this album was mastered completely analog (AAA), from the original analog master. Mastered by René Laflamme in the 2xHD mastering lab and cut at Bernie Grundman at 45 RPM.
The 2xHD Fusion Mastering System is an innovation in audio restoration for a virtual audio reality. Editing is done at Bernie Grundman Mastering Lab on tube cutting equipment.
