<br><br> 2AAD<br> <br> The nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) were of fundamental importance to the future development of the genre, and indeed no composer who embarked on symphonic composition after Beethoven was able to avoid reacting to them in some way or other. A good many years after Beethoven's death they were still regarded as unsurpassable achievements, indeed as the culmination of the genre, and Robert Schumann, for example, even felt convinced that with these works the development of the symphony had come to a close. Nowadays, with our ability to look back on a whole line of Romantic and Late Romantic symphonic works, we are more careful in our judgements, although for us today Beethoven's symphonies still remain as profoundly relevant as ever, one of the human soul's most sublime utterances and one always to be approached with the greatest deference. Paul Kletzki (1900-1973), one of the most important conductors of the post-war period, was engaged in the systematic study of Beethoven's works, and his various visits to Prague during the 1960s gave rise to a fine series of recordings of the complete symphonies of the composer, which, on account of its vitality and its sheer depth of feeling, as well as its relatively high degree of technical perfection, is thoroughly deserving of rerelease on modern technical media.
