In October 2006, experienced pianist Eddie Higgins embarked on a challenging project. Together with Jay Leonhart and Mark Taylor, Higgins went into the studio and recorded 50 love songs that had never been heard on any other album before. These tracks will be released on four albums. 'A Fine Romance' is the first in this series.
Considering how many albums Higgins recorded over the course of his life, it is amazing that the three were able to find 50 famous tunes that he had not yet recorded. It's also amazing that a trio could successfully perform and record 50 tunes in four consecutive days. The trio's achievement is reminiscent of the two marathon sessions of the Miles Davis Quintet, which produced four albums in the 1950s.
But thanks to the trio's combined expertise, such a feat was possible. Each musician delivers one pleasing performance after another. Higgins' stylish phrasing and delicate swing, Leonhart's expressive bass and Taylor's solid backing make this a most enjoyable listening experience.
