ENGLISH

Idil Biret has great affinity to ensemble playing with partners whether it be works with two pianos or with various groupings for chamber music making. But, while she has most major works of chamber music in her repertory (see below), her performances of these, both in concert and recording, are relatively few. Biret's first ever ensemble performance was at the age of seven at the Ankara radio studio where she played Bach's Piano Concerto in D minor to the accompaniment of a string quartet. Then, she joined the great Wilhelm Kempff to play Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos in Paris in 1953 at the age of eleven. In 1967, at a time when she was developing interest in the music of the 20th Century, she participated at the Royan Festival in France upon the invitation of the musicologist and author Claude Samuel. There, with the pianist Georges Pludermacher, she played Boulez's Structures for two pianos, Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion and also gave the world premiere of Archipel I of Andre Boucourechliev for two pianos and percussion (with Jean-Claude Casadesus, percussion). In September 1973 she repeated the same program at the Shiraz- Persepolis Festival of Arts (yes, there was once a festival where modern music was performed in Iran) this time with pianist Christian Ivaldi. Earlier, the same year, Biret had joined another legendary artist, Yehudi Menuhin, to perform three violin sonatas of Beethoven, No. 5 'Spring', No. 7 and No. 9 'Kreutzer' at the first İstanbul Festival in July 1973. This concert was broadcast by the İstanbul radio live at the time and again in 2020 by the Ankara radio, as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of Beethoven. She then played all the cello sonatas of Beethoven with Maurice Gendron in 1975 in İstanbul. In 1980, with the London String Quartet, Biret played the Schumann and Brahms Piano Quintets at the Queen Elisabeth Hall in London and then at the İstanbul Festival.
