Matador was recorded in a single day in 1962 and includes the epic 'Melanie' (a three-part suite) penned by McLean, as well as Dorham's lilting 'El Matador' and a rousing version of 'Beautiful Love.' Throughout the session, Timmons, Smith and Moses provide sublime support, while Dorham and McLean trade sinewy solos. The emotional musical exploration is coupled with an accessible post-bop structure that makes for a brisk, yet infectious mix of tunes that drag your foot while engaging your head and heart.
Chris Bellman cut Matador from the original analog master tape, and the sound is a revelation! The dense acoustics of Soundmaker Studios provide tight bass, crystal clear drums and beautifully rounded tones from Dorham and McLean's horns. This is another fine example of Impex Records shedding the baggage of modern music making to reveal the essence of the music and the great talent that created it. We are delighted to bring this sadly neglected classic back into the collection of true fans and (perhaps more importantly) to a whole new generation for the first time.
