<p><i>Fanfare, Capriccio and Rhapsody</i> embraces an extraordinary range of musical styles from a wide variety of sources. The <i>Medieval Suite </i>pays homage to Léonin, Pérotin and Machaut, three master-composers from the Middle Ages, while the <i>Sketches on a Tudor Psalm </i>is based on the same hymn tune that Vaughan Williams used for his celebrated <i>Fantasia on a Theme by</i> <i>Thomas Tallis</i>. The <i>Capriccio</i> thrillingly sets off a saxophone quartet against the full wind band, while the <i>Rhapsody </i>embroils the solo trumpet and wind band in a dazzling set of variations. The <i>Symphony </i>is a tightly-integrated work whose central movement is a plaintive <i>chaconne</i>.
