Not many musicians can claim to have been instrumental in two of the most amazing debut albums in just two years. Vince Clarke can. After 'Speak & Spell' with Depeche Mode, he released the LP 'Upstairs at Eric's' with his newly formed band Yazoo in 1982. As a founding member of Depeche Mode, he may have produced the more cohesive album. But 'Upstairs at Eric's' convinces with substance and ambition - and is light years ahead in terms of feeling.

Clarke's partner Alison Moyet adds a powerful blues voice to his pearly synth sound, and the combination results in dancefloor classics like 'Don't Go' and 'Situation.' 'Only You,' actually written for Depeche Mode and rejected by its bandleader Dave Gahan, probably would have sounded silly and robotic on 'Speak & Spell.' Moyet's voice gives the song a bittersweet, engaging feel and it was a smash hit. MFSL is now releasing this landmark '80s synth-pop manifesto in its Silver Label series as a 140g LP. The lacquer cut for this LP was done by Paul Stubblebine on the Gain 2 Ultra Analog system in Sebastopol. The LP is released with consecutive serial numbers as a limited edition.
