Fazil Say, Black Earth and other works performed by pianist Fazil Say, violinist Laurent Korcia, orchestras and chamber ensembles conducted by Muhai Tang and Eliahu Inbal (Naive, disc plus DVD). Lang Lang be hanged, 38-year-old Turkish pianist Fazil Say may well be the most exciting classical pianist of his generation. His performances of Beethoven and Haydn sonatas -- not to mention Stravinsky's own piano adaptation of "Le Sacre Du Printemps " -- have already captivated the listening world and on this extraordinary disc, he drops the other shoe and we discover that he's just as vivid a composer as he is a performer of the most revered music in the repertoire. An original, he's not, but his derivativeness is gripping. He is, like Frederich Gulda before him (and Jean-Yves Thibaudet now), a classical pianist who considers himself a jazz pianist too. What makes Say so convincing on the musical cusp is that his Bartokian use of Turkish folk forms and his leavenings with mystic Scriabinesque trills give all of his music a rhythmic boldness and fiery exoticism that tends to render genre irrelevant (while "preparing " his piano a la Cage and Crumb sometimes, his Paganini variations are on the same theme Rachmaninoff used). Watch the DVD and his antics aren't far from the piano matings of Keith Jarrett. An extraordinary figure. -- The Buffalo News, Jeff Simon, November 2008
